Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Marcus Peak and Grand Park

A late season traverse of Marcus Peak and Grand Park using the ridge NW of Marcus Peak (~5000' & ~16 miles). We staged a vehicle at Sunrise before heading out from Sunrise Point to save ~3 miles from a prior 2014 trip.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Forecast was marginal, but with most of the day above snow level and intermittent sun breaks we were quite comfortable.

Descent from Pt 6218 to Huckleberry Creek trail was very steep but doable. From 6080' NW of Pt 6218, descended due W to reach the trail using intermittent game trails. Crossed Huckleberry Creek at 4000' and ascended the hogback just left of the stream, then game trails to reach the E side of Grand Park. Especially magical and surreal was our night time headlamp hike from Grand Park back to Sunrise with a thin coating of snow over everything, light snowfall, and intermittent stars peaking through breaks in the clouds. Total time was 13.5 hours, photos can be seen here.
