Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Iron & Teanaway Peaks

A good mix of scramble students and scramble graduates went up to do some more peak bagging on sunday, after the Experience Field Trip on saturday. The initial plan was to do Koppen, we instead chose to do Teanaway Peak (later ended up doing Teanaway and Iron Peaks) to avoid stream crossings. Good driving conditions. Trail is mostly snow free. Rock is great as always.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail was mostly snow free. All the scree in the regular route up Teanaway was still covered with snow and we avoided most of it by walking over the snow patches. Some nice rock scramble challenges on the way up and down. Everyone did great!

Started at the Iron Peak Trail head around 7.50am. Trail was mostly snow free. We reached the saddle between Teanaway and Iron Peak by 9.35 am. Headed up to Teanaway Peak with students leading some route finding. All the scree in the regular route up Teanaway was still covered with snow and we avoided most of it by walking over the snow patches. Some nice rock scramble challenges on the way. Everyone did great!

Made it to the summit by 10.30. Scrambled back down to the saddle, where we faced some more interesting rock scramble challenges. The group was helping each other out, great camaraderie. Some butt belay, some veggie belay, some down climbing and loads of fun + excitementIMG_20180603_113154.jpg

While back to the Saddle, the group suggested, they could do more peak bagging (God, two back to back days and long scrambles, these guys are conditioned like crazy). So we headed up to Iron peak, bagged another peak. Headed back to the cars by 2.30pm.

6.30 hrs car to car. Two peaks. Two students graduated. First scramble for one. Second for two more.

Overall good weather, great day and even better group.
