Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Crater Lake & Blowdown Mountains

Nice and easy scramble year round and not far from Seattle. Especially nice when you want a change from the usual I-90 scrambles on the west side. Must go to Crater Lake Mtn as zero views from Blowdown Mtn.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • We parked at the Little Si TH.  Discover Park Pass required.

I've done this trip in snowshoes and now with only a little snow and think it's lovelier with snow.  No avy danger when doing this trip.

We used Tim Hagen's Blowdown Mtn Peakbaggers track for both trips although we hiked to Si via the old trail rather than the new trail as shown on the track.

We left the TH at 8:45am and arrived at the base of the Haystack in 1hr & 45 minutes.  Made a short stop at the viewless Blowdown summit after making a small navigational error which probably cost us about 10 minutes.  Arrived at Crater Lake Mountain summit around 12:30pm and enjoyed eating our lunch on the sunny summit.  Departed a little before 1pm and back at the car at 3:45pm after taking a 15min break at Mt Si.

No helmet or ice ax needed.  One person's GPS read 10mi and almost 5000' gain.

Photo of us departing the summit with Mt Si's Haystack and Rainier in the distance.  Lovely day although a bit breezy while on our way to Si.  20181112_125224.jpg
