Alpine Scramble - Cowboy Mountain

We had a sunny pleasant day with reasonable snow conditions. 5 students were successful on their first snow scramble.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Snow conditions were variable, but mostly not too bad.     Conditions for plunge stepping and glissading were generally good.  We saw no signs of recent avalanches,  and the few cornices near the summit were small.

This was a fairly straightforward trip.  We hiked up to the top of the Hogsback chairlift , then continued up the ridge toward the top of the 7th Heaven chairlift.  From there it was steeply up to the west ridge and then a ridge walk to the top.  Good views all around.

On our descent from the west ridge, we backed down for maybe 100 vertical feet, using the steps we had kicked on the way up.  The rest of the descent was largely glissading with some plunge stepping.
