Alpine Scramble - Castle Peak & First Mother Mountain

First Mother > Peak 6326 > Castle Peak > S Castle Peak.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • From Mowich Lake CG, trail to Knapsack Pass, bootpath to First Mother and back to the First Mother-Castle ridge. Heading to Castle we stayed on or just below the ridge, which involved some brush bashing initially but became fun scrambling before reaching Peak 6326. Peak 6326 is just a meadow hill (T1) but a peakbagger.com peak. One party member was having trouble keeping a moderate pace and waited for us at the saddle between Peak 6326 and S Castle, where we would return to Mowich Lake as a loop. The rest of  the party reached both the highest point and the map summit of Castle Peak, had lunch there with great views. On return most also scrambled S Castle Peak, there is a bootpath on the W side at the S end of the peak. T2, true summit is at the very north end of the peak, marked by a cairn. The descent from the saddle to the north side of the lake began as a clear bootpath but was often hard to follow through open meadow. The forest was mostly open with game trails that were mostly helpful, with deadfall in places.

PS: We considered adding Second Mother if time allowed, and it didn't... Considering that two of us needed 9 hours c2c to complete Second Mother the next day--7 hours from the Castle saddle and back--it's a good thing we didn't try.
