Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Camp Muir & Anvil Rock

Excellent snow scramble to Anvil Rock on a beautiful day.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Bare sections on Skyline trail, icy areas in parking lot and along parts of lower trail.  Solid snow well before reaching the chute leading to Panorama Pt.  Skyline and Pebble Crk trail was under snow but flagged, tracked, and fairly easy to follow.  Deep, soft recent snow beginning above 6,000'.  Tracked out to Camp Muir, but up to about a foot deep post-holing  off the beaten path.

Perfect blue sky day.  Cool air but felt warm, light breezes, perfect day for this trip.  Brought, but did not use crampons.  Opted to avoid Camp Muir; looked like hundreds of people going up and down.  Instead, we spent an hour on the summit of Anvil Rock enjoying peace, solitude, and beauty - had it all to ourselves with superior 360 views.  Several short glissades on the descent.  Very crowded at Paradise.

5.5 hours up, 2.5 down.  A fantastic, memorable trip!
