Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Bald Rock

A beautiful blue-sky day for this seldom done scramble.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Drove into MRNP via the Nisqually entrance, then Stevens Canyon Road to Box Canyon.  Crisp and chilly early a.m. with temps just above freezing, frost and patches of ice along the road.

Took the Wonderland trail to about 5,300', left trail and descended two or three hundred feet, then traveled easterly to the top.  We wore helmets, and micro-spikes were very helpful with footing on sections of snow and wet branches/brush/etc.  Found a sort-of a path, which was most likely an elk trail.  Car to car in less than 7 hours including breaks and leisurely lunch in sun on the summit.  A great day, very fun trip.
