Sleeping Beauty Peak

A former fire lookout site, Sleeping Beauty Peak is a prominent basalt feature located 12 miles northwest of Trout Lake. It's 1.3 miles as it climbs 1,400 feet to the summit. For this effort, you'll be rewarded with views of Mount Adams, Mount Rainier, Mount Saint Helens, and the Indian Heaven Wilderness.

GETTING THERE

From Trout Lake, Washington head northwest on SR 141 North toward Jennings Road for 1.5 miles. At Trout Lake Creek Rd turn right and continue for 4.1 miles continuing onto Forest Road 88 for another 0.5 miles. Turn right onto Forest Road 8810 and continue for 6.2 miles to Forest Road 040. Turn right onto Forest Road 040. The Sleeping Beauty Trail (No. 37) begins on the north side of Forest Road 040 approximately 0.25 mile northwest of the junction with Forest Road 8810. There is parking for three vehicles with limited turn-around space.

ON THE TRAIL

The trail climbs steeply through old grown firs and hemlocks gaining 1,400 feet in 1.3 miles. Leading to a former fire lookout location, this is a popular trail that is well-maintained and graded. There are no water sources along the trail so bring plenty along with you. As you near the top, you will encounter a series of tight switchbacks signalling that the top is near. On a clear day at the summit, you will see Mount Adams (just 11 miles away), Mount Rainier, Mount Hood, and Mount Saint Helens.  The trail is usually accessible from mid-May through October or until the first snows close the roads for the season.
