Possession Sound

A challenging sea kayak trip with possible 15-knot winds and 2-foot waves because of its long fetch. Possession Sound lies between Everett and Mukilteo on the east and Whidbey Island on the west. This sound is an often used feeding ground by grey whales in early spring.

launch points

  • Edgewater Beach - 1500 1st St Mukilteo, WA 98275
  • Lighthouse Park - 609 Front Street, Mukilteo, WA 98275. There is hourly pay to park that can fill quickly later in the day, especially during the summer.

on the water

Possession Sound is  3-6 nm wide, east to west and  9 nm long,  north to south, and lies along the  south eastern shore of Whidbey Island. It is south of Camano Island  where currents are weak and variable. Because of  its shallow depth, large tidal exchanges are significant to a good trip plan, especially at the mouth of the Snohomish River in Everett.

Lighthouse Park to Possession Beach Waterfront Park

8.3 nm round trip, Difficulty: Sea Kayak III+

Cross to Whidbey Island immediately or paddle south along the Mukilteo shoreline and cross later.Watch for traffic as pleasure and fishing boats come through this area often. The crossing itself is about 1.5nm. Paddle south along Whidbey Island to Possession Beach Waterfront Park or a bit further to Possession Point State Park. Spend some time here before heading back across to Mukilteo to end the paddle.

  • Afternoon wind in this area is pretty typical, so keep an eye on weather forecasts and currents and be ready for some chop.
  • Most beachfront property on Whidbey is private. Public parks are the only areas you can land  on the beach.
