Fuzzy Top

A short, more primitive, dog-friendly hike in Capitol State Forest near Olympia.

getting there

Take the Black Lake Blvd exit off of US 101, turn left at the light and drive 3.5 miles  where the road becomes 62nd Ave SW. Continue 0.7 mile, turn left onto Delphi Rd SW, and in 2.1 miles bear right onto Waddell Creek Rd SW. In 2.7 miles, continue straight on Sherman Valley Rd. In 1.3 miles, it becomes the C-Line Forest Road. Drive for 6.7 miles, until the intersection with Road C-4000, turn left, and drive south for 1.5 miles. At the intersection with Road D-1000, turn left onto Road D-1000 and drive it for 1.1 miles until to its intersection with Road D-1500. Turn left onto Road D-1500 and continue for 0.4 miles to the Fuzzy Top Trailhead (1,650 ft).

on the trail

A lightly traveled trail that is narrow with shrubbery overgrowth in some areas. Start by climbing 50 feet up a forested knoll and then descending 150 feet to a saddle.  After hiking through a clear cut, enter old growth forest and continue to the summit.

INFORMATION FOR LEADERS

  • Permits are required in this area for all fee-based (course-related) activities, regardless of group size.  Leaders may list trips at this route/place with the understanding that they need to verify that a permit has been obtained before running the trip (if required as outlined above).
