Freund Canyon
This 7.3 mile loop hike heads up steep switchbacks with 1,800 feet of elevation gain to reach a ridge with panoramic views over the town of Leavenworth and its orchard-studded valley. It's a trail popular with mountain bikers.
getting there
Driving SR-2 to Leavenworth, turn north onto Chumstick Road, and drive toward Plain. In 1.7 miles turn left onto Freund Canyon Road which immediately bears right. In 0.6 mile turn left onto a Forest Road 7702. Take the next two left forks to remain on Forest Road 7702. In 0.3 mile from the second fork, reach a gate and park there making sure to not block the gate. Also note that there are private driveways along this road—please use caution and respect private property.
on the trail
Hike the loop route clockwise enjoying spring flowers like lupine, paintbrush, desert parsley, and balsamroot on the way up and soak in views from the ridge on the return.
Notes
- The trail is used primarily by mountain bikers and is narrow with limited visibility in some places. Be alert for approaching bikers.
- This trail is also frequently used as a logging road and is subject to occasional closures. Be sure to plan ahead.
- Some routefinding skills may be necessary when there is snow.
