Dalles Ridge
A moderate snowshoe trip up Forest Road 72 with views of the White River Valley, Sun Top, and Mount Rainier.
getting there
Drive SR-410 towards Mount Rainier and the Crystal Mountain Ski area. After Greenwater turn left on Forest Road 72 and park at the gate.
snowshoe route
Snowshoe along the road, keeping right at 0.3 mi. First main view is 2 miles in, at about 3,000 ft. At 2.2 miles is a talus slope and possible avalanche terrain. Continue on the main road back into forest. Second main viewpoint is reached at 2.7 miles (3,500 ft). At 3.2 miles is another slope that could be avalanche terrain. Road re-enters forest and at 4.1 miles (4,000 ft) are more views. This is a good turn-around point. The road continues around and up Dalles Ridge.
Notes
- Keep an eye out for elk, the road is gated in winter because they use the area.
