Columbia River: Cape Horn

This 6-12 nautical mile paddle explores the tall cliffs and waterfalls at Cape Horn on the Washington shore. Moderate currents and strong winds can be experienced on this route.

Launch Points

  • Rooster Rock State Park. Take Exit 25 off of I-84, 22 miles east of Portland.
  • Dalton Point Boat Ramp. Take Exit 29 off of I-84, one mile west of Multnomah Falls. It is a primitive boat launch with no dock. A large parking lot and restrooms are available.

On the Water

Paddle across the river to the Washington side and then east from Rooster Rock or west from Dalton Point to reach Cape Horn. A visit to Phoca Rock in the middle of the river can be part of this trip with possible siting of sea lions. Depending on river flow rates and winds, this trip can be mild or challenging.
