Chehalis River Surge Plain Natural Area Preserve

A Natural Area Preserve that supports high quality Sitka spruce-dominated wetlands laced with saltwater-influenced slough channels for some incredible kayaking. Walk along the Chehalis River from Preachers Slough Road to Blue Slough on a graveled railroad grade or paddle the river and slough. Look for ospreys and bald eagles.

getting there

Drive SR-107 to 3.8 miles southwest of Montesano, turn north Preacher Slough Road and then left into the trailhead parking area (130 ft). Continue a bit further for water access.

on the trail

 The walk starts in a lot off Preachers Slough Road to the Blue Slough access along the Chehalis River.

notes

  • Check Chehalis River levels in winter to avoid floods and tide charts for Montesano for rising or falling tides.
