Bowerman Basin

A short 0.9-mile boardwalk that takes you to excellent viewing of shorebirds during their spring migration. Best viewed from 2 hours before and after high tide.

getting there

Heading west on SR 109 from Hoquiam,  turn left on Paulson Road and right on Airport Way.  The address is 1131 Airport Way, Hoquiam, WA, 98550.  There are no visitor facilities at this address.

There is limited parking is available across from Lana's Hangar Cafe on Airport Way. Do not park on the blacktop road west of the gate. To access the trail from the parking area, walk past the gate near the information kiosk, then continue walking past the long row of airport hangers. The Sandpiper Trailhead is across from the last hanger, where the blacktop ends.

on the trail

Thousands of shorebirds congregate to feed on the mud creatures during the annual migration in April and May.  Many of the bird species present will be most visible within two hours of high tide.

A 0.6-mile walk along a poor quality paved road takes you to the boardwalk to the viewing areas along the Sandpiper Trail.  Bring your binoculars and spotting scopes!  Other wildlife common along the shoreline such as raptors and red winged black birds may be seen.  This is a good naturalist outing!
