Mount Ellinor & Mount Washington

Winter Scramble - Mount Ellinor (winter)

Winter scramble of Mt. Ellinor from the Lower or Upper TH, depending on access. We *hope* this will be a winter scramble. In the event that it's already melted out, we'll divert to Lightning Peak, which is harder but holds snow longer. *** Priority for Kitsap 2022-24 scramble students needing a graduation scramble until May 10.*** All others, please do not ask permission til May 10.

  • Technical 3, Strenuous 3, Basic Alpine Climb, Basic Rock Climb, Intermediate Ice Climb
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 6.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,200 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 5,945 ft
  • Pace: 1000ft/hr

9:30 a.m. Lower TH, OR if you want to do a 5,000ft day with us from Big Creek, 7 a.m., Big Creek CG.

Goal is to get Kitsap students their winter scramble for graduation.

We'll meet at the Lower TH at a reasonable hour (9:30) and travel at a moderate pace of 1,000ft/hr. We'll let you know whether to bring snowshoes or crampons or both before the trip. Hopefully we will have a good glissade down the big chute in the mid-afternoon.

If you want a 5,000ft day and would like to hike with us from Big Creek Campground, please let us know, and let us know what other 5,000ft days you've done recently. We need to make time to reach the Lower TH in about 2hrs, so the pace will be  quicker.

If Ellinor is melted out by late May, we'll divert to Lightning Peak, a more challenging, 4000+ft scramble that includes a 30ft root climb, steep descents on muddy "trail" a steep snow slope, a bit of rock scrambling to the summit and a big glissade down. We will advise whether this scramble is appropriate for students' skill levels after determining whether we do this one as a Plan B.

We may try to camp in the area after our rock scramble class at McCleary on May 25.
