Sequim Bay

Trip

Sea Kayak - Sequim Bay

Student paddle from Port Williams into Sequim Bay and back. Priority to any basic sea kayak student from this year's classes.

  • Sea Kayak II+
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 8.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 10 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 2 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 2 kts
  • Pace: 2-2.5

Meet at Port Williams boat launch also known as Marlyn Nelson County Park.  This boat launch is north and east of the City of Sequim.  The easiest way to get there is to take the Sequim AVE exit off HWY 101.  Drive through town to the first round about.  Take the first exit heading east onto Port Williams RD.  Port Williams RD ends at the boat launch.  No pass or launch fees required.

Meet early enough to be ready to launch at 10:00 a.m.  Pre-launch brief at 9:30 a.m.

Leader permission required.  Please let me know if you are one of this year's basic sea kayaking students and the requirements you need to met for a successful student paddle.  Open to all branches.

We will head south from the Port Williams boat launch and enter Sequim bay by going around Klapot point on the west end of Travis Spit.  We will have a flood current in bound.  From there, past John Wayne Marina and continue down the west shore to Sequim Bay State Park.

Lunch break at the State Park boat launch.  There are benches, picnic tables and campground restrooms with running water.

Those students who require a Paddle Completion Sheet, fill them out as best you can and bring them with you.  We will work on them over lunch.  We will also do any required rescues right after lunch

On the return trip, we will cross over the bay to Paradise Cove at the east end of Travis spit and then exit the bay by again rounding  Klapot point heading north back to Port Williams.

If the current at Middle Ground is appropriate, we can work on paddling in current and crossing small eddy lines.  This area, just south of Klaypot Point can have currents as strong as 3 knts, but both the flood and ebb are mild on the 17th, so I expect nothing more than 1.5 knts.   The eddies are easily avoidable and optional.

Be prepared to review, demonstrate, your basic paddle strokes.

There are alternate options for launching in the bay if the winds are too strong at Port Williams.  Discovery Bay or Port Angeles Bay are two other alternatives.
