Sea Kayak - Rich Passage

Tacoma students paddle. *This activity was updated 4 June to SK III+ trip. While currents in the passage will be above 3 knots sometime during the day, the trip has been planned where we will avoid any current greater than 3 knots. Students confident with bracing please sign-up. We will launch from Illahee state park. We will make our heading for Waterman Point. Before proceeding into Rich Pass. With lunch at ManChester state park. After lunch and tide change, we will ride the flood current over to Orchard rocks with a break at Fort Ward park. Before returning to Illahee State Park.

We will meet at Illahee State Park.  This park opens at 8 o’clock in the morning. We plan to launch by 10:00 a.m..

We will have a before launch meeting at 9:45 AM. Please be fully dressed and ready to depart before the meeting begins  

Also, be sure to bring your paddle completion sheet completely filled out even if you’re not able to fill it out all the way still bring it. We shall go over it at lunchtime.

This park also has some very nice warm, large restrooms. I think they have showers in there too anyway, they are very nice.

You will want to bring your ten essentials if you have them.

Proper immersion clothing required

Bring the following if you have them:

Marine, VHF radio

towing belt

Bring a lunch, hot snacks, tea, or coffee and snacks for on the go. 

Orchard rocks has a large population of sea lions and seals, if there’s salmon in the area. We should see plenty of these critters there.

Required Equipment

These eight essentials plus The Ten Essentials are required on all sea kayaking trips.  All but the whistle and clothing should be provided with any kayak rental.

  1. Floatation in both ends of the kayak
  2. U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  3. Paddle
  4. Spray skirt
  5. Bilge pump with floatation
  6. Self-rescue paddle float
  7. Waterproof whistle
  8. Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally
