Naturalist Trip - Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge is a prime birding location, but who knew that is is also listed in the "Best Wildflower Hikes of Western Washington" for March through May? Join us for a morning of birding and wildflowers as we casually explore the varied habitats of the refuge. We will take the time to practice using identification apps for wildflowers and birds - newbies to using these apps are welcome to join us. (read Leader's Notes below so you can download the apps in advance)

  • Easy
  • Casual
  • Mileage: 5.0 mi
  • Pace: 1.0

Meeting place and time will be sent registered participants two to three days prior to the trip.  There is a $3.00 entrance fee or the America the Beautiful Pass or its equivalent.

Exploring Nisqually is always a treat, especially when well prepared.  Walking out into the tidal flats on an elevated boardwalk can be cooler than expected, and the boardwalk itself is frequently slippery.  We will be walking a slow, naturalist pace looking for birds and other types of wildlife as well as flowering plants.  Participants should dress warmly and bring their Ten Essentials, rain gear, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes, a snack, water, binoculars, camera, and a spotting scope (if you have one).

We'll plan to practice using two identification apps while on our walk:  Merlin Bird ID and Washington Wildflower Search (both free).  Please download them in advance and "play" with them a bit to become familiar with their features.
