Iron Bear & Miller Peak

Naturalist Trip - Iron Bear & Miller Peak

Iron Bear is a pleasant trip off of hwy 97 on Teanaway Ridge. We will not be going to Miller Peak. We will be identifying flowers, shrubs, butterflies and birds that inhabit the east slopes of the Cascades. Expect to spend a full day at this trip between the driving and the time hiking. There will be frequent stops. This will be a naturalist outing to explore local plants and wildlife and meets requirements for Field Trip-3 of the Seattle Introduction to the Natural World 2023 course (email me ahead of opening of registration, starting on 5/31). Others are welcome to take available spots when registration opens.

We will meet at 9:30 am at Iron Bear trailhead. Carpools are suggested (e.g. Green Lake/65th P&R, Preston P&R) and an e-mail will be sent out a few days before the trip.

Iron Creek trailhead is off of hwy 97 on Forest Road 9714.  There will be a three mile long dirt road.  You can ford  Iron Creek about 200 yards before the trailhead or park at one of the turnouts just before the ford.  It is a small creek and easy to cross with a high clearance vehicle.

There is no entry fee or restroom at the trailhead.  Plan to stop for a restroom break before arrival (e.g. Safeway store in CleElum).

This is a very enjoyable spring trip if you like to stop and observe plants/wildflowers, butterflies and birds.  Bring poles, a loupe, binoculars and wildflower and/or bird apps on your phone or a book if you'd like.  Bring your lunch, water and rain gear in case of showers.
