Intermediate Snowshoe - Lake Valhalla via Smithbrook Road

Explore a remote lake tucked in a beautiful basin

  • Moderate

  • Mileage: 10.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,000 ft
  • Pace: 1.5mph

TBA, probably FR6700 pullout around 8am. No permit needed.

Lake Valhalla is a special winter prize - between road conditions (will there be a place to park?), avy danger (see below) and navigation challenges, this can be a fun trip for experienced snowshoers. Bring your ice axe, helmet, and a flexible attitude: we might tag Mount McCausland, we might get to the lake, or we might get to do neither of these. We will make all decisions as a group and aim to be back at the cars before dark.

Routes: Lake Valhalla (WTA) and Mount McCausland (Mountaineers).

Avy danger: if the NWAC forecast for the day is Considerable (orange) at any elevation, we will switch to the backup location (Skyline Lake and Tye Peak).

Road issues: if the pullout is not plowed, we will also switch to the backup location.

Priority until Dec 28 for those instructing at any of this year's Basic Snowshoeing field trips (Jan 7, 8, or 14). If you are signed up for any of these, contact leader for registration.

Open to Intermediate students from past seasons, but not students from the 2023 Intermediate Snowshoeing course unless they have other qualifying badges (scramble or climb).
