Day Hike - Scorpion Mountain

Ridge hike with two summits, flowers and abundant bugs. Naturalist oriented hike with stops to identify flowers.

  • Moderate/Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 9.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,650 ft
  • Pace: 2 mph, ok to stop and take pictures.

Brickyard park and ride 6:30 AM.

Road to trailhead is driveable but somewhat gnarly.  High clearance is helpful but shouldn’t be necessary.  Please come prepared with at least 2 liters of water, over the ankle boots, cash for carpooling and, of course, your backpack with the ten essentials.  It’s been awhile since I’ve done this one but I remember three things vividly: 1) lots of sun exposure, 2) pretty flowers, 3) the most bugs bites I’ve ever experienced.  The flowers and views were worth it, just be prepared for bugs and sun.

This is a naturalist oriented hike.  We will stop briefly from time to time to identify flowers and take pictures but otherwise keep moving at a steady, moderate pace.  Moving means fewer bug bites.  Lunch break at or around the summit and I typically come straight home after the hike  on Sunday hikes.

Hike will be trail #1067, Johnson Ridge which is reached by Forest Roads 65 and 6520. Road to trailhead is shown on Greentrails Map #143 Monte Cristo, actual trail is on Greentrails Map Benchmark Mtn #144. Route includes two summits--Scorpion and Sunrise. Prefer contact via email.
