Day Hike - Dirty Face Ridge

Dirty Face Ridge to Silver Lakes way trail loop. A 10 mile, +3200 loop hike to the summit of Mt. Townsend.

  • Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 10.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,200 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 6,280 ft
  • Pace: Avg 1.5-2.0 mph / 800-1000' per hr.

Meet at 0830 at the Tubal Cain trailhead.

This hike is a loop that begins at the Tubal Cain Trailhead on FR 2870 and the Dirty Face Ridge route, but instead of returning the way we came after reaching the summit of Mt. Townsend we will continue south from the summit about a mile until we reach the Silver Lakes Tr. #842. From there we'll take #842 west and then connect to the Silver Lakes way trail. Then we'll follow the way trail north to the road (FR 2870), and walk about a mile on the road to the Tubal Cain parking area. This makes a loop of about 10 miles and 3200' gross elevation gain, which includes all the ups and downs on the route.

Our pace will be moderate and steady. We'll climb about 800-1000' per hour on the steep parts. Our overall average should be about 2.0 mph or a little less. After we reach the summit and start downhill, we'll pick up the pace to about 2.5 mph, give or take.  This hike will take 6-7 hours including lunch.
