Day Hike - Colockum Wildlife Area

Just north of Ellensburg we will go on a 16 mile, 2800' exploratory hike of Naneum Canyon in Naneum Ridge State Park. Part of this is along a roaring creek with lots of birds. There is also flowery steppe-shrub. We will take an old road to a draw that feeds the creek (it could be very flowery). Please see leader notes.

  • Strenuous
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 16.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,800 ft
  • Pace: 2-2.25 MPH, most of this is on a smooth forest service road

9:00 AM at what Google maps calls 'Naneum Canyon',  https://maps.app.goo.gl/YKz9Dt9W9nTseAXj8   It is about 2 hours from downtown Seattle.  No privy, no pass needed.

Here is the route https://caltopo.com/m/R301E  I have not hiked the portion of this where we get off of the road that follows the creek and we take the old road into the higher country; I/we may have to improvise, possibly going off-trail (this won't include any scrambling or bush-whacking). I'll make sure you get the promised miles. :-)
