We will meet at Longmire National Inn parking lot, near the museum and the rest rooms at 8:30. Chain up if required. Gate should open around 9:00 a.m. If gate, road or weather conditions rule out Paradise, we will snowshoe a route starting from Longmire. Participants can organize carpooling to Longmire, and from Longmire to Paradise. More info closer to trip.
We will probably cross Edith Creek on a bridge and take the Golden Gate trail overlooking Edith Basin. Exact route will depend on weather, any avalanche warnings, and other prevailing conditions. From time to time, we will stop to demonstrate, learn, practice and assess performance of several basic snowshoe techniques. We will review in the field essentials for a winter day pack for the intended trip. We will discuss and practice "Leave No Trace". We will identify winter hazards such as tree wells, avalanche slopes and avalanche terrain traps. Avalanche transceiver demonstration, time and conditions permitting.
