Pinto Rock/Bowling Alley

Basic Rock Climb - Pinto Rock/Bowling Alley

**FOR TRAINING ONLY – NOT AN ACTUAL TRIP** This is a fantastic beginner rock climb! There are 4 pitches, but the entire route has ample hand holds and foot holds. The approach is a short hike uphill (approx. 15 minutes); the descent requires a 40-ft rappel (with a fun overhang!) and short hike back down a steep sandy slope.

  • Basic Rock Climb
  • Moderate
  • Elevation Gain: 400 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 5,200 ft

We will meet at the parking area by the trailhead off of NF-77 (46.324445, -121.924740). Please arrive by 7:00 AM; I expect everyone to be geared up and ready to hit the trail by 7:30 AM.

Note: High-clearance vehicles are required. The last 2 miles  of the forest road leading to the trailhead are incredibly rocky and uneven. Also, cell service is very limited in this area, so take extra note of the GPS coordinates of the meeting location.

We will have an early enough start to ensure that we have plenty of time for all students to successfully summit. I do not have a specific pace expectation because this is a beginner climb, but I do expect that students give their best effort. Loose rock is a high likelihood on this route, so everyone should move with care. I anticipate getting back to the cars around 3:00 PM (could be sooner, could be a little later).

Our group (max 6) will break into 3 rope teams (one lead and one student per team). This is a bolted route, but rope leads can place protection along the route so that students can practice cleaning.

Once all groups have summited, we will all have time at the top to eat, drink water, relax, and change shoes for the descent. We should be able to enjoy some fabulous views up there!

Most importantly, I want everyone to have fun and gain confidence in their climbing skills.
