Backpack - Royal Lake

Strenuous overnight backpacking trip. This trip is snowpack and permit dependent and may be updated to a different location. Preference will be given to B3 students until May 1st, then open to all.

  • Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 14.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,650 ft

Meeting details will be communicated to the participants over email.

This is a beautiful trip to Royal Basin & Royal Lake. This is a popular area with both day hikers and backpackers.

Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful is required for parking.

On day one we will hike from the trailhead to Royal Lake (7 mi/2600 ft) and set up camp. We should have time to enjoy the lake and the upper basin. On day two, we will pack up camp and head back to the trailhead.

We will maintain a good pace, however, will stop for any photo ops to enjoy ourselves. Participants need to be in shape enough to handle elevation gains and mileage. Expect long days and make no plans on the last day of the hike as the return time will probably be late evening.

Bear canisters are required in Royal Basin.

The location of the backpack may be changed due to trail or weather conditions.

There is a small fee for the permit ($8.00/participant) that you will need to reimburse the leader.

Please note the registration preference is given to B3 students before May 1 and open to all after that.

When requesting permission, please list any recent hikes or backpacking trips with similar milage and elevation gain.
