Alpine Scramble - French Cabin Mountain/West Peak
(Bad weather change of venue to West Peak/Thomas/Baldy) A gorgeous fall scramble with 4 summits in the SW corner of Mount Rainier National Park (Point 4100, Iron Mountain, Copper Mountain, Pyramid Peak). This strenuous traverse (~19 miles, ~5900’) keeps things interesting with new terrain most of the day. Only for folks that are fully vaccinated.

A key aspect of this trip is the ‘Iron-Copper Shortcut’ to Pyramid Peak (visits 3 summits, yet only pays once for most of the elevation gain):
Our day starts (and ends) at the Kautz Creek Trailhead, albeit from different directions. We get warm quickly with ~2 miles of cross country to the summit of Rampart Ridge, Point 4100 (later in the day our tired bones will be hiking the Kautz Creek Trail on the far side of this valley):
From there we motor on the Wonderland Trail to just past Squaw Lake and our departure point for the ‘Iron-Copper Shortcut’:
… on the way to the summit of Iron Mountain with Squaw Lake below:
Descending the NNE aspect of Copper Mountain which leads to the summit of Pyramid Peak:
After summiting Pyramid Peak we descend our ascent route then make our way west to resume maintained trail travel near Mirror Lakes (and the ~7 mile hike back to the cars). Photos from past trips in this area can be seen here (this route/place), and here (a Pearl Falls trip).
