4 MAC Youth & 2 adults skied in 3.5 miles, found a great off-trail campsite, set up tents, skied out the next day
Trail hikes and off-trail exploratory hikes for winter season photography, between snowfalls, in the Painted Hills. A short-notice or spontaneous winter trip recommended for snow-accented Painted Hills.
Maps are not always as they seem.
8" of new light snow over a rock hard crust. 6.25 miles tour/ski. 2,421-ft elevation gain
Just know that this hike starts off with an immediate steep ascent. If you are not ready for that, you might be surprised, as I was.
Lead as a conditioner. Bare trail to Horese Camp, then used microspikes and snowshoes to the summit.
Trip date Feb. 20th. Winter adventure in deep snow along Rampart Ridge.
View from ridge, near summit. Beach parking lot near center photo. Pt Townsend ferry on right. Rainer in the background and the Straits of Juan de Fuca behind viewer.
Originally planned for Artist Point on Sat but heavy snowfall and avy changed it to following day at Skyline Ridge. All but two participants cancelled for a great day snowshoeing. Same elevation in less distance! Photo is looking towards Cowboy Mt at Stevens Ski Resort.
great little trip. easy to follow route w/maps along the trail until we veered off towards the top along Tronsen Meadow. We skinned up through an old burn which was easier due to most low branches missing, sat at the north side of windy knob for lunch and a great ski back down the open face and back through the burnt trees. started just after 9:00 and back at the trail head by 3:30.
Poor visibility. Snow and wind. Avalanche danger. Nice powder.
SkiPlain (www.skiplain.com) is a hidden gem for a very nice day of XC Skiing for all levels from beginner classic to the more advanced skate skiers.
Turned around due to weather.
Despite low visibility, the trip to Huntoon Point is always a treat. The best views are of the group members.
Great snow conditions in spite of the heavy snowfall of past weeks, but with only brief wintry views through the shifting clouds on our way to Point 6308.
Commonwealth Basic, very hard snow, boot walkable by some. Close destination. Very scenic.
