Mount Fury/Southeast Glacier (6/29/2025 Route Beta)

Sun, Jun 29, 2025

Disclaimer: This is a private trip but posting here so it might useful to fellow mountaineers. In additional to the accident report I posted, this is a beta for traversing from Luna Col to Fury Southeast Glacier. However, since we turned around before reaching the glacier due to the accident, the beta does not include the glacier part.

Great hike for hot summer days. The trail is 95% under a forest canopy. Follow the trail past the Kiln for a nice lunch at the river.

Open Backpack - Loowit Trail

A very interesting backpack moving through varied terrain. Hiking through the blast zone with carpets of blooming lupin 45 years after St Helen's eruption was the highlight of the trip.

Fri, Jun 27, 2025 - Sun, Jun 29, 2025

Disclaimer: This is a private trip and is an accident report. Posting here so it could be useful to future climbs of Fury. On 6/29/025, as my climbing partner and I approached Mt Fury from Luna Col in the Pickets range in North Cascades, I took a 120 feet fall on a steep snow slope and had to be rescued by a helicopter. Here are the details of this accident.

Day Hike - Annette Lake

Tue, Jul 1, 2025

7 of us enjoyed perfect summer conditions this morning as an Early Tuesday Naturalist Hike. Avian highlights included 4 types of thrushes, 3 warbler species, swallows skimming over the lake, a junco's nest with four eggs, a pair of Rufous hummingbirds, and delicious wading temperatures. Beargrass is lovely right now.

Alpine Scramble - Boundary Peak

Sun, Jun 29, 2025

A fun scramble up a MRNP 100. Our group got to use our snow scrambling skills including crampon use, ascending a gully, crossing a small moat, traversing a ridge, using a fixed line, and an outstanding glissade. A little mix of everything on a bluebird day.

Lost Trails of Rainier - Emerald Ridge Loop

Sun, Jun 29, 2025

What happens when you start on trail and then are routed off and blocked by blowdowns over and over again. Do you... 1. Boulder hop over giant body sized boulders in the creek that would exhaust a gymnast. 2. Scoot down pitchy blowdowns. 3. Hang on to the side of slope when the trail has disappeared. 4. Turn Around. This is an adventure to find a lost trail where the past is met with the latest route finding skills.

Alpine Scramble - Governors Ridge & Barrier Peak

Sun, Jun 29, 2025

We scrambled Governor’s Ridge on June 29 with Shirley R., Tamara H., and Anthony T. The route involved bushwhacking, mixed snow conditions, side hilling on loose scree, and an exposed summit with rewarding views of Hood, Adams, Helens, and Goat Rocks. Solid teamwork and careful descent through rockfall-prone gullies made for a safe and memorable day out.

CHS 2 Hike - Rainbow & Island Lakes

Sun, Jun 29, 2025

This full roster (12!) had stunning views of Rainier/Olallie Lake and clear blue skies. Recent snow melt at Island Lake means many bugs - Rainbow Lake is definitely less buggy. Great group, great outing.

Wonderful views along a ridgeline hike in and out of the trees to a fire lookout with 360 views. A hidden gem: saw less than 10 other hikers all day. Bugs were pretty bad.

Intermediate Alpine Climb - Mount Rainier/Kautz Glacier

Fri, Jun 27, 2025 - Sat, Jun 28, 2025

Two-day climb of the Kautz Route on Mt Rainier with an overnight at Camp Hazard, featuring straightforward ice pitches (AI2) and lots of penitentes. The descent was interrupted due to a medical emergency, leading to a helicopter rescue at 11,800' — huge thanks to the rangers and fellow climbers who helped along the way.
