This is a challenging hike for beginners. It starts out with a slight elevation gain, but shifts into high gear between the middle and upper falls. One should be in fairly god physical shape for the climb to the top.

A fun day on the trail with some newer, and some more experienced snowshoers on the old Commonwealth Basin trail. There was a large boyscout troup starting out at the same time, and a couple of ranger lead trips. Trail was well packed, but off the trail the snow was in good condition creating our own road from time to time.

A medium effort Winter scramble with varying degrees of difficulty depending upon route selection. It would be a challenge to be successful if a significant amount of trail breaking is required.
Some icy hard pack on the inner loop side, outer loop has less snow and much less hard ice. Doable but recommend yaktrax or similiar and poles until we get a good melt out. Pkg lot was melted out, no problems accessing TH
Beautiful mountain and sea views on a very strenuous winter scramble (~12 mi, ~6,000 ft) that visits First Top as well as Point 4795 above Lake Angeles. This shared outing is made possible by utilizing portions of the Heather Park Trail as well as the Lake Angeles/Kalhane Ridge Trail which both begin at the Heart of the Hills parking area.
