Today’s Essential Skills clinic provided an opportunity to learn about the history of kayaking in Greenland, how it inspired recreational sea kayaking in Europe and America, and how to use the skinny paddle.

El Nino poor snow conditions made getting to the hut challenging, but skiing was descent above the hut and the weather was sunny, though cold.
Numerous varieties of mosses, lichens and even a few liverworts were found. Squaxin park is an exceptional site and the leader, Bob Keranan, was knowledgeable, approachable, and supported learning.
This year’s stormy winter weather has brought down many trees, limbs and debris onto the trails at Tolmie State Park. The Park was closed for a few days due to down power lines over the road entrance. The Olympia Branch Stewardship and Conservation Committee scheduled a trip for February 8th to clear as many down trees and as much storm debris off the very popular trails as we can safely accomplish in a day.

Trailhead on SE 93rd Street (not the Terrace TH on SE 87th St) has parking for 2-5 vehicles.
A solitary (and exploratory) mountain day with lush rain forests, a wild river, gorgeous vistas, soaring alpine slopes, and a high-end workout (7000’ gain over 18 miles). This trip verified the Baldy Trail from Slide Camp as a reasonable route (in spite of its abandonment) which allows a greatly expanded menu of multi-day traverses from the Royal Basin trailhead without the use of a car shuttle.
