The last few years a growing number of backpackers who may have bent the rules are now being met with an equal amount of rangers helping to problem solve and willing to enforce on trail and in camp. Here's what you might expect this year with the fee increase.
An adventurous trip with perfect conditions: a gazillion flowers, cool and sunny weather, and more bears spotted than mosquitoes.
The 6 of us did a Lundin Peak basic climb Sunday 07/27/2025. We left the parking lot at 8, went up Lundin, rappelled the east side, skirted by East Lundin Peak and the base of Red Mountain. Back to PCT TH at 7:30. The weather was beautiful and the crew was awesome. Everyone had fun and the climb was uneventful.
12 hours car to car of over diverse, lightly traveled terrain.
A 3-day jaunt around Mount Hood in near-perfect conditions. Peak wildflower season, manageable water crossings, only intermittent bugs, and not quite as crowded as I expected.
Beautiful quiet morning hike to both lakes along the Greg Ball Trail. Not a soul until we returned to the Falls trail for the final (hot!) mile out. Strong students showed an impressive 2.4 mph moving pace.
After years of dreaming and scheming, the Glacier Peak "Balloon" via Frostbite Ridge Route delivered an unforgettable alpine rollercoaster of joy, solitude, and diverse, technical terrain. With 41.77 miles and 13,840 feet of elevation gain, this adventure was a full immersion in the wild beauty of Glacier Peak.
Incredibly challenging and remote climb on a seldomly traveled route. Five star glacier route and scenery in the heart of the North Cascades and a one star, incredibly tedious bushwacking approach, resulting in a three star average for the route!
Easy road walk, trail of the giants is worth the detour. Recommend taking a map as there are many roads, easy to get turned around.
Fun alpine trad climb! Mix of scrambling and climbing. Crux was finding the R1 anchor.
Palisades and Marcus Peaks from Sunrise Point. Wildflowers were in full bloom, bugs were minimal, and aside from a wasp encounter on the flank of Palisades, conditions were excellent with plenty of water along the route.
Successful climb via the Walrus Glacier
One-day scramble of Cadet Peak. Cadet is probably the easiest of the Monte Cristo Group (Monte Cristo Peak, Kyes Peak, & Columbia Peak) from a technical standpoint, but it is fairly strenuous. The crux was a few loose gullies and rocky slopes we scrambled up (probably easier when it's covered in snow), but the summit views were worth the trip. Plus, we got to check out Monte Cristo ghosttown
We visited both coasts of this big island. Hikes, naturalist outings, historic sites & museums - some self-guided, some professionally guided. Ten hikes involving a diversity of ecosystems. Quaint, rustic or farm-stay lodgings. Newfoundlanders enjoy a slower paced lifestyle and loved to tell us their stories. At the end of the trip, we were all "screeched in" to become honorary Newfoundlanders.
July 27, 2025 very well maintained trail in excellent condition. Paved road all the way to trailhead. Vault toilet at trailhead. The trip can be completed as a loop by combining the Packwood Lake Trail and the nearby Pipeline Road. You may encounter bicycles and vehicles on the road though.
This is about 8.22 miles if you take the Trail of the Giants loop. Mainly forest roads.

Upper trailhead is accessible with high clearance vehicles, loads of ripe berries on the trail!
A beautiful but brutal hike up and down Aasgard Pass with scrambles up Dragontail Peak and Little Annapurna.
Successful one day climb of Eldorado in 17hrs car to car
