A group of 12 Mountaineers enjoyed 12 days day-hiking all around the verdant island of Madeira, spending days exploring the capital Funchal and the port town of Porto Moniz plus enjoying trails on all corners and in all the major ecosystems of the island, staying in nice conveniently located hotels along the way and being transported to trailheads with a shared van. We hired an outfitter to book the lodgings and transport and a local guide to take us on 5 different 'off the beaten track' hikes (we also did 2 of the best known hikes on our own) and we really enjoyed most of the hikes, though the island (especially the well-known trails) was extremely crowded with chaotic parking.
Cornice Pk is about 1/2 mile south of the Liberty Bell/South Early Winter Spire group of peaks. The scramble isn't overly difficult with a great 360-degree view of the North Cascades.
A fun day out with sunny weather, introductory current play, reef peeking and rescue practice.
Great trail run with considerable elevation changes.
Basic Climbing students () 5and Olympia Branch Leaders (4) set out to climb Sahale Glacier. The trip had a wide variety of adventures including steep climbing, gorgeous camp sites in the alpine, slabby boulder field approach and a very crevassed glacier that required navigation skills prior to the rocky scramble to the summit.
Great trip to Washington's 3rd (or 4th?) tallest peak.
Successful summit of the South Arete of SEWS
Two day climb of Chopping Block via Upper Goodell creek trail and Terror creek climbers trail approach.
A fantastic day on a Cascade classic with four people getting their final climb completed for the Bellingham BMC.
Awesome day with great snow conditions top to bottom with a not so sufferable approach/exit!
Good trail, few bugs by lake. Smoky air until near upper lake where breeze took it away. Take plenty of water if it's a hot day or hiking later in the day.
Success on the second annual EMSK Bridge to Bridge paddle! This year we went west to east, from Bowman Bay to La Conner. A fun, 10.6-nautical mile paddle with eight enthusiastic (and mud-resistant) EMSK members: Cathie F, Karen S, Michelle M, Charlie R, Maria E, Dewet P, Rebecca S, and yours truly.
Big beautiful lake worth the work to get there. We had the lakeshore to ourselves. Ripe huckleberries, thimbleberries & strawberries.
Glacier peak via North Fork Sauk trail. Three day itinerary cut down to two, leading to a 25 mile hike out over 21 hours.
Counter-clockwise loop around the Kachess Domerie ridges.
Quick scramble up Red Mountain via Commonwealth Basin.
6 of us from CHS-1 had the trifecta of awesomeness: ripe berry picking, an hour for wading, swimming, and socializing at Rainbow Lake, and two less common birds, an American goshawk and a belted kingfisher. What an awesome way to beat Seattle 90's heat.
A great easy-paced walk around the park with several nice views of the Sound.
We followed the standard route starting at Lake Washington Playfields and finishing at Stan Sayres Park. A car shuttle was set up to facilitate getting back.
