“Someday we’ll have to do that”. You know, those short trips you’d like to do yet never seem to find the time for. The shoulder season is the perfect time, especially when you can align multiple ‘someday’ trips with brief good weather windows.
A beautful evening to hike to beautiful waterfalls.
Rewarded with a beautiful warm day! Was it because we were all so well prepared? Or was it because Sunshine Ned was hiking with our group?
20 Mountaineers, mostly from Olympia, cleaned up and cleared debris from Big Creek Campground, a 65-site USFS campground near Lake Cushman.
A great day in the snow with a terrific group of snowshoers.
Excellent environment to have quiet in-the-cove paddle exercises AND have quick access to currents. A strong ebb is easiest to leverage for dynamic water enthusiasts.
We completed a loop walk , including Kerry , Parsons Gardens , Marshall , Centennial , and Myrtle Edwards Parks . It was an enjoyable day with limited views .
Friday's 7nm EMSK paddle down to Camano Head and back was fun. Even though the tide was going out for the first half of the trip we managed to see a pod of gray whales far off across Port Susan. Also saw great flocks of hooded mergansers, half a dozen bald eagles, and a banded kingfisher.
Pleasant evening for a hike and dinner with a view
Nice day in pleasant powder with generally good weather.
Snowshoeing in a winter wonderland. A good day at the pass.
We completed a loop walk , including visits to Fremont Peak Park , and Woodland Park. There were limited views from several locations.
Beautiful bluebird day for a hike to catch up with a friend. Microspikes needed towards the top.
Counter clockwise circumnavigation of Mercer Island from Seward Park.
Warm and pleasant evening for a hike. A herd of Elk enlivened the trip.
What are those strange mounds in Wilkeson? New finds of bygone times.
A great soul cleansing North Cascades day (albeit partially cloudy ;). The ~5500’ gain workout had some much appreciated frosting in the form of afternoon clearing w/stunning views of the surrounding area. [Lead photo by Nina Crampton]
Slippery from Mile 2 on; microspikes and poles required
Longmire gate opened at 10 a.m. due to recent snow. We started from Narada Falls with about 8" of overnight snow, and found more as we got higher. Trail apparently not broken since previous Sunday. Nine on our group and five others breaking trail. No tracks seen on the High Lakes Trail. We followed the orange wanded route without difficulty to Reflection Lake. Owing to the tyranny of the Longmire Gate, we did not proceed further, but headed back.
There's still deep, consolidated snow on the trail above 2000'. The trail's passable but the snow makes hiking much more difficult and adds an hour+ to the round-trip time. Sturdy boots and high gaiters recommended.
