What a day on the trail. I left the park with a wholesome feeling of accomplishment. We weren't able to complete the whole boardwalk repair, but because everyone pitched in until the end, we were able to complete the essential and hardest parts.
Really fun group, and overall great day in the Mt Si area. Did the full route including up and down Little Si, around the Boulder Garden Loop and traversing over to do the Mt Si trail and Talus Loop trail loop, with a couple of snack breaks along the way. Left TH around 8:30am and back to the cars around 1:30pm. Overflow lot mostly empty at 8:30, and available spots in both main and overflow lot when we returned.
An incredibly dramatic setting, from the fog covered Strait of Juan de Fuca, the looming wall of Klahhane Ridge to the south, and the chilly/brooding Lake Angeles after sunset (replete with a rising moon). Throw in a couple Salish Sea cruises plus a great workout (~5500’, 12 miles) and you’ve got a pretty good day.
We had a lovely hike to the Upper Twin Falls viewing area and enjoyed the sun shining through the trees. There was ice and snow on some portions of the trail but most of the group used hiking poles and/or micro-spikes to safely navigate these areas.
We completed a loop route on this hike , that included wetlands , stream crossings , and limited views. The forest is scenic and the trail is in good condition . The route includes the high point on the Ridge
1/9/22 road is good to trail head, be aware of ice where water froze over road way in spots. Minimal parking along road, lots of snow on trail. I highly recommend micro spikes. Too many limbs and trees over trail for snow shoes.
Beautiful day and great group! Little Si parking was quite crowded and we opted to hike Teneriffe Falls instead which added a couple miles to the overall distance. Trail was completely snow covered but well-broken and microspikes were needed for the whole hike. Teneriffe TH parking was closed but there was ample parking just up the road at the school bus turnaround. The falls themselves were gorgeous in the snow. They were running and had many icicles along the sides.
Heavy snow made for interesting driving, but excellent skiing.
A normally pedestrian venue made quite exciting (25-30 mph winds) on our exposed traverse of West Tiger 3, 2, and 1. A great workout when severe winter storms rule out other venues.
Good workout session. Weather more favorable than forecast.
Challenging snowshoe trip to the Middle Fork
Visited Whatcom Falls Park to photograph it on Christmas Day's snowstorm of 2021.
Easy loop hike on multi-use trails. Many options for alternate routes to lengthen or shorten the trip. This park would be good for practice in staying found and/or use of a map.
Successful winter trip up Little Si - a little snow falling at the top, but nothing sticking. Lovely group of people made for a pleasant morning hike.
Cold, early winter morning at Cougar Mountain!
Successful outing -- conditions were significantly better than expected
A great bad weather alternate (although we ended up doing it the day after the bad weather, with spectacular sunshine). A great winter scramble training trip with route finding challenges on the ridges to Dixie (bad runout avoidance in several places), plus a high end workout (afforded by the interconnected network of trails in the area).
beautiful day- groomed trails until the very end made this long snowshoe route doable on a short day
