Beautiful weather and a great crew made for a fabulous summer-is-winding-down, overnight trip with three summits attained.

This ~10 mile hiking excursion has some great destinations. The waterfalls just kept getting better and better. The rainforest of Rainier is awe-filling! This was a mixture of beautiful switchback climbs through the woods that got the heart pumping and the layers peeling off then strolling along a flat gravel road giving time to stare up at the huge trees without fear of stumbling. The last bit had us traversing over the River bed comfortably on a series of recent man-made bridges with hand rails and included a peek-a-boo of Mt Rainier’s peak. Easy and varied hike.

A warm September evening for a hike in a forest.
Two glorious days to celebrate the end of summer and welcome the coming of fall. The days were dry, mostly sunny, and just shy of 70º. Our group was very compatible and the scenery is magnificent.
A beautiful, warm and calm September day with little boat traffic made for a great paddle. Launching from Des Moines, we circumnavigated the island in a counter-clockwise direction. The water was exceptionally clear for this time of year. Photo by Dewey Fuller.

Spectacular views on this gorgeous loop that kept things interesting the entire day (besides giving us a great workout at ~15 miles and ~5000’ gain ;). Our ascent was via Rampart Ridge and the Wonderland Trail (with cross country scrambling right out of the gate), and a return via the Kautz Creek Trail (thereby avoiding a car shuttle).
