Sutton Mountain

Enjoy the unfolding scenery, spring wildflowers including hedgehog cactus, wildlife, geology and solitude while hiking trails and routes in the Sutton Mountain Wilderness Study Area. Sutton Mountain is composed of volcanic ash and pyroclastic flows of the John Day Formation that flowed from the Monument, Oregon area about 16 million years ago. The John Day Formation is the same formation which preserved fossils in the nearby Painted Hills unit of the John Fossil Beds National Monument. The hike to the top of Sutton Mountain is 7.6 miles round trip with 1,650 feet of elevation gain, and the Black Canyon hike is 5.0 miles round trip with 1,363 feet of elevation gain.

Swale Canyon is a moderate, 11.4 mile round trip hike with 450 ft in elevation gain. The trail follows Swale Creek past basalt ledges, to smooth rock on the water that is good for swimming.

Don't let the name fool you! Swamp Creek is in fact a fun and scenic canyoning route, located in the North Cascades off of the Mt. Baker Highway. This Intermediate canyon has a little bit of everything, from rappels, jumps, a slide or two, and plenty of downclimbs through the unique geology in between. This route is best run starting in mid August, and typically runs v3 a3 III.

Hike the trail in Swan Creek Park that is between Tacoma and Puyallup, just off the Puyallup River. The trail nestled in a stream cut canyon in an urban area, but it is wild and undeveloped. Look for eagles, salmon, little critters, and maybe an eagle's nest nearby.

Swauk Pass to Blewett Pass

A one-way moderate to strenuous snowshoe of 10.5 miles and 1,200 feet of elevation gain. The route starts at Blewett Pass, formerly Swauk Pass, and follows the Wenatchee Ridge to Old Blewett Pass, the original Blewett Pass. From there follow the Old Blewett Pass road back to Highway 97.

A very strenuous hike in the Columbia River Gorge on the Washington side near Bonneville Dam. The top of Table Mountain features one of the best panoramas of the Columbia River Gorge, as well as views of Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier, Mount Hood and Mount Adams. Most of the 4,320 feet of elevation gain is in the last two miles. Table Mountain's dramatic south face and pyramid profile beckon the adventurous hiker ready for a strenuous climb that is good training for summer summit attempts.

Table Rock / Squaw Peak is a strenuous, 22 mile and 2-3 day snowshoe hike with 1,800 ft in elevation gain. The hike is long and follows a narrow ridge up to an old fire lookout. Enjoy views south to the Wallowas in Oregon, Blue Mountains, and the jagged peaks of the Seven Devils bordering Hells Canyon.

Other downtown locations of interest to find encompass the University of Washington Tacoma Campus, Greater Tacoma Convention Center, Theater District, Old City Hall, and Wright Park with an arboretum. There plenty of hills and stairs that are great for training.

Hike ascending through forests to two secluded lakes near Snoqualmie Pass. In winter, a strenuous snowshoe routes leads to Ollalie Lake and Pratt Vista. Hearty hikers can opt for an 18-mile trip from Talapus Lake to Mason Lake and out the Ira Spring Trail or plan a backpacking trip to visit and enjoy the many lakes in the area.

Moderate to challenging scrambles in the northeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park from Owyhigh Lakes. Tamanos Mountain and the Barrier & Buelle combo are the most commonly done. If you're looking for more of a challenge, traverse to Banshee Peak through the Sarvant Glacier Valley. If you want a longer scramble with more peaks make a one-way trip that visits Tamanos Mountain, Governors Ridge, Barrier Peak, and Buell Peak.
