Seattle Pioneers

Seattle Pioneers

Pioneers is a year round program designed for 7-9 year olds who are interested in spending time outdoors. No experience or skills necessary join - we will teach all the skills needed to participate in activities. The group meets once a month at The Mountaineers Seattle Program Center to learn skills and goes on 1-2 outings a month.

FAMILY-DRIVEN, STAFF-SUPPORTED

Our Pioneers program provides youth ages 7-9 and their parents/guardians with the opportunity to get outside once a month. This club is designed to expose youth to a variety of outdoor activities and have fun! Participating families will have the chance to climb, hike, paddle, explore, and learn how to be safe in the outdoors. The group will be supported by Mountaineers staff, but parents will be expected to play an active role in planning and even leading some trips. *Staff will provide opportunities for parents to advance their own outdoor skills as well as learn key skills for leading kids safely in the outdoors. This program will focus on skill-building for both youth and adults, and on building an outdoor community.

For the 2020/2021 year, Pioneers will be divided into two cohorts: Pioneers for ages 7-8 and Nomads for those who are 9. This will allow us to give more families more opportunities to get outside. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out Member Services!

Note: Pioneers or Nomads membership is $900  annually for families joining in the fall. Families joining in the winter will be prorated. Families will have the option of paying up front or paying the annual fee in a series of installments. This is an annual club.

*Note that while  parents/guardians are expected to be active participants in the club, there is plenty of flexibility so that youth can participate in a trip even if a parent/guardian can't make it.

HOW DO OUTINGS WORK?

Seattle Pioneers are based out of the Seattle Program Center in Magnuson Park. Pioneers meet monthly on Tuesday evenings, can participate in monthly skill-building workshops, and have the opportunity to go on one or more weekend outings a month.

Outings are organized by staff and parent volunteers and chaperoned by at least two adults. Outings range from single-day hikes, to paddles, and climbs. Some trips have a maximum capacity, while others are open to as many youth and adults as want to attend.

How do I know this is the right program for my family?

Pioneers is a club and requires a time commitment and annual program fee of $900 (which can be paid in monthly installments). In return, members gain a community of outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy spending time learning skills and getting outside together. As families grow through our programs, lifelong friendships are built. When graduates of our teen program come home from college, they meet up with other Mountaineers friends to go hiking, backpacking, and climbing. This program is just the beginning.

In order to build a cohesive community, Pioneers registration is available only in September and January.

HOW DO I GET MY FAMILY INVOLVED IN PIONEERS?

To get involved, first you'll need to sign up for a Family Membership with us. Once you have created your new account, add your kids to your account by clicking on the "Membership" tab and adding a family member.

Here is the FAQ on that process.

Next, please take our new member survey which will help staff learn what members are interested in. The survey will answer some of your preliminary questions and give you an idea of what to expect from the club. We're looking forward to a great season!
