Ski/Snowboard Leader

The holder of this badge has been approved to lead ski and/or snowboard trips for The Mountaineers.

DESCRIPTION OF SKILLS

The holder of this badge has demonstrated sound judgment, strong leadership skills, and technical proficiency in:

  • Route planning
  • Ski/snowboard techniques necessary for the specific course or activity requiring leader participation (see below)

WHAT DOES THIS BADGE ALLOW ME TO DO?

  • This badge allows you to lead ski and/or snowboard trips for The Mountaineers consistent with your skills and training (backcountry, nordic, skate, etc.)

HOW DO I GET THIS BADGE?

To get this badge you must get approval from a branch's ski and/or snowboard committee or the committee sponsoring such activities. The minimum requirements include having:

  • Graduated from a MOFA course or first aid equivalent 
  • Attended a Leadership Seminar within two years of becoming a Leader (each Branch Skiing Committee shall define activities, which meet the requirement of a Leadership Seminar).
  • Successfully participated as assistant leader on at least 2 trips offered through The Mountaineers 

For Basic Cross-Country:

  • A graduate of the Basic Course or someone holding Basic Equivalency status. 

For Backcountry skiing/snowboarding

  • A graduate of the Backcountry Course or someone holding Backcountry Equivalency status. 
  • Successfully completed avalanche level one training 

Requirements for continuing participation as any type of ski/snowboard leader:

  • A member of The Mountaineers in good standing. 
  • Update skills every 5 years to maintain familiarity with current techniques. 
  • Lead at least one ski trip within every consecutive 3 year period from the date of initial approval as a Ski trip Leader. The ski trip must be a Skiing Committee sponsored ski trip.
  • Approved by the Skiing Committee to continue to lead ski trips.
