  • Sea Kayak II/III
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 10.1 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 14 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 1.5 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 0.5 kts
  • Pace: 3.2 kts with or without drogue shoot

Meet at 9:45am at the Wauna boat launch. This is at the west end of the Purdy spit, Purdy, WA. Bring a drogue in the form of a water bottle (or two) and cord. This will be a means of an "equalizer" so all will be able to paddle at their preferred conditioning pace.

Bring lunch to eat on Cutts Island.

Conditioning series events are intended to get people out on the water to develop strength and endurance.  A secondary goal is to offer regular outings, particularly through the winter.

The main focus is steady forward paddling. While I am willing to put my ACA coaching into practice and provide a few tips (only to those who tell me they want it), this is not intended to be a coaching clinic as it is free.

My preferred flatwater conditioning pace is 4.0 kts, faster than many so I often fill a 1/2 liter water bottle and drag it behind me. It doesn't take much for substantial resistance. The resistance can be varied by adding or substracting water. Maybe even bring a couple of choices and we can experiment. The goal is to set a 3.2kt pace with my GPS and folks can dial in their preferred resistance. If you are not sure your flatwater pace is 3.2 kts, call me at 360-710-0616 to discuss.

Covid-19 precautions.

Here is a link to a photo of the "drogue chute" that I use. A disposable water bottle also works.

As long as you have a sea kayak with perimeter lines and bulkhead and a dry suit then you have permission to sign up. If you are unsure you pace is up to the modest 3.2kt pace, then contact me.
