Pre-Trip Skills Practice - San Juan Islands from Anacortes

Pre-Hakai trip skills practice for those on the expedition.

  • Maximum Wind: 15 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 3 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 4 kts
  • Pace: Brisk. We will tow each other at times.

6:45am meet, shuttle car to ferry terminal. 745am launch. Aspiration is to get on the 4:15pm ferry back to Anacortes, arival time 5:40pm, but if we miss that we will have dinner in Friday Harbor (about $15 each) and take the 6:25pm boat.

This is a pre-trip practice session for participation on Hakai trip. We may, in some circumstances, take one or two extra people if you paddle at our speed. 

We will be practicing towing on the southern end of Lopez.

We will be using our sails between Cattle Pass and Friday Harbor. If you don't have a sail we may tow you.

Required Equipment

Required Equipment

The kayaking essentials (see below) plus the Ten Essentials. Additional equipment may be required by the leader - please check the Leader's notes for additional information!

  1. Flotation in both ends of the kayak
  2. U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  3. Paddle
  4. Spray skirt
  5. Bilge pump with flotation
  6. Self-rescue paddle float
  7. Waterproof whistle
  8. Appropriate clothing and immersion wear for the conditions
  9. Helmet
  10. VHF Radio
