Climbing Course

Intermediate Rock Module

This course will help students develop the necessary skills to climb multi-pitch trad routes.

This module is designed for Tacoma Intermediate Climbing Program students to help develop the skills necessary to safely climb multi-pitch alpine rock routes. 

Required Reading:

  • Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills, 9th edition, Part 111. Rock Climbing
  •  Rock Climbing: Mastering Basic Skills, 2nd Edition, Craig Luebben, ISBN 978-1-59485-862-8

Recommended Reading:

 Prerequisites:

  1. Tacoma Intermediate Program Student
  2. Have passed or graduated from the  Anchors & Self-Rescue Module
  3. Leading sport climbing routes  graded 5.7/5.8 or harder 
  4. Have accumulated a minimum of 3 teaching credits, and/or be in good standing with the Intermediate Committee teaching credit requirements

The Module has been split into 2 parts:

Single Pitch 

Single pitch will focus on efficient and proper trad gear placements and leading. 

Multi-Pitch 

Multi-pitch will focus on building gear anchors, rope management, and transitions.

Assortment of carabiners and slings

Rock climbing shoes

Set of nuts, cams .5 - 2 inches, optional set of hexes and tricams

8-10 single length alpine draws, 2-3 double length alpine draws

Two cordelettes

Auto-locking belay device, such as Petzl Reverso or BD Guide
