Intermediate Field Trip #6 Ice Climbing 2 - Heliotrope Ridge and Lower Coleman Glacier & Seracs

This is the Ice Climbing 2 field trip for the Tacoma Intermediate Climbing program. This is field trip weekend option A, covering the same content as weekend option B. Please only sign up for one weekend.

  • Basic Glacier Climb
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 11.0 mi

7am Heliotrope Ridge parking lot.

Practice ice climbing fundamentals and lead and clean at least one ice pitch.

Skills covered include:

-Chopping steps

-Anchor setup, including ice bollards.

-French Technique

-Placing ice screws.

-Front Pointing


-V Thread

-Leading and Cleaning at least one pitch

Required Equipment

harness, 10Es, 12 point crampons, ice axe, 3 screws, chest sling, pastice or full shank boots, helmet, 6 single runners, 10 carabiners, belay gloves, prusik slings, 1 rope per 2 climbers, 4 locking biners, 2 double runners, cordeletter, overnight glacier gear, rescue pulley, 2 ice tools.
