Checkpoint: Lead Belay

Practice: Belay Escape, Rappelling, Rock Climbing Technique

Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate safe lead belaying including setup, communication and belay techniques.
  2. Demonstrate safe lead belaying with a Munter hitch, with some prompting from an instructor.
  3. Describe and demonstrate safe use of a handline and prusik cord, with some prompting from an instructor.
  4. Demonstrate a hands-free and transferring load to an anchor, with some prompting from an instructor.
  5. Describe and demonstrate safe rappelling technique with an extended ATC device with autoblock backup, with some prompting from an instructor.
  6. Describe and demonstrate rock climbing techniques appropriate to various route features, with some prompting from an instructor.

Rough Agenda:
Introductions (10 minutes)
Belay escape demo (25 minutes)
Munter belay and prusik on handline demo (15 minutes)
*Lead belay checkpoint (25 minutes)
*Munter belay practice (15 minutes)
*Belay escape practice (40 minutes)
*Rappel practice (40 minutes)
Demonstrate and practice rock climbing techniques (60 minutes)
Debrief (10)
* Small group rotation
