Tacoma Basic Climbing FT 3 Test: Prusiking, Knots, Kiwi Coil. Practice: Roped Glacier Travel, Crevasse Rescue.

Tacoma Basic Climbing Course FT 3 Glacier II includes:

Checkpoint: Glacier tie-in.

Practice: Roped Glacier Travel, Crevasse Rescue.

Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to:

  1. Describe and demonstrate proper ice axe carrying techniques.
  2. Describe and demonstrate tying into the middle and end of a glacier-travel rope using the correct knot(s) and carabiners.
  3. Describe and demonstrate a crevasse rescue using 2:1 drop loop system as middle and end climber, with some prompting from an instructor.
  4. Describe and demonstrate several snow anchors (vertical mid-clip and deadman), with some prompting from an instructor.

Rough Agenda:
Introductions (10-30 minutes—until the gate opens)
Hike into practice area (30 minutes)
Ice axe discussion and demonstration (20 minutes)
Demo glacier travel, prusik belays and anchor construction (20 minutes)
*Glacier tie-in checkpoint; practice glacier travel and belays (60 minutes)
*Crevasse rescue (120 minutes)
Hike out to cars (30 minutes)
Debrief (10 minutes)
* Small group rotation
