This Field Trip will be held at the Tacoma Program Center. Please be ready to start at 8 AM. 

Checkpoint: 10 E's, Knots, Prusiking

Practice: Kiwi Coil, Crevasse Rescue, Prusiking, Anchors

Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to...

  1. Describe and demonstrate using a Texas prusik to safely ascend up a rope and back down, wearing a backpack.
  2. Describe and demonstrate safe tying and clean dressing of all knots required for the course.
  3. Describe the 10 Essentials (“10 Es”), and indicate them among own gear.
  4. Describe and demonstrate a crevasse rescue using 2:1 drop loop system as middle and end climber, with some prompting from an instructor.
  5. Describe and demonstrate tying into the middle and end of a glacier-travel rope using the correct knot(s) and carabiners, with some prompting from an instructor.
  6. Describe how to test crampon fit.

Rough Agenda:
Introductions (5 minutes)
Demo crevasse rescue (45 minutes)
*10 Es skills checkpoint (20 minutes)
*Prusiking checkpoint (30 minutes)
*Knots checkpoint (20 minutes)
*Crevasse rescue (90 minutes)
Crampon discussion and review (20 minutes)
Debrief (10 minutes)
* Small group rotation
