This field trip will be heald at the Tacoma Program Center. Please be ready to start at 8 Am. 

Tacoma Basic Course FT I: Fundamentals

Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to:

  1. Describe and demonstrate tying into the middle and end of a glacier-travel rope using the correct knot(s) and carabiners, with some prompting from an instructor.
  2. Describe and demonstrate using a Texas prusik to safely ascend up a rope and back down, wearing a backpack, with some prompting from an instructor.
  3. Describe and demonstrate safe tying and clean dressing of all knots required for the course, with support from an instructor.
  4. Describe the 10 Essentials (“10 Es”), and indicate them among own gear, with some prompting from an instructor.
  5. Discuss and describe course-required gear and appropriate clothing for field trips and climbs.
  6. Demonstrate how to coil a climbing rope, with support from an instructor.

Rough Agenda:
Introductions (15 minutes)
Demo glacier tie-in (end and middle climber) and prusiking (30 minutes)
*Construction of Texas prusiks, etc. (40 minutes)
*Glacier tie-in (middle climber) and prusiking (40 minutes)
*Knots (40 minutes)
*Gear Review (40 minutes)
Rope care discussion and coiling demo (20 minutes)
Debrief (15 minutes)
* Small group rotation
