CANCELED - Seattle On-Trail Navigation Workshop

Seattle On-Trail Navigation students learn and practice map/compass pairings and GaiaGPS for hike/urban walk/backpack on-trail travel. Course enrollment and workshop completion are pre-requisites for the Field Trip.

On-Trail Navigation Module 2 is a two-hour, in person workshop at the Seattle Program Center. Students first complete Module 1, viewing several, short topographic map and compass YouTube videos and taking a self-correcting, Alchemer platform quiz.  The quiz poses several navigation questions based on the Green Trails Mt Si NCRA 206S (rev 2021) map.  Students are also required to build one GaiaGPS route in that map area with waypoints before the workshop. They also submit to the instructor a photo of their declination adjusted compass .

During the workshop students first work a brief problem around paper topographic skills .  They demonstrate tandem use of map and compass to measure and follow bearings using good technique. GaiaGPS instruction first employs laptop/tablet to build a route. SmartPhone instruction includes orientation to screen functions, then focuses on Trailhead use, digital navigation on route, and end of activity procedures.
