Pacific Northwest Canyoning ChickFest 2022

Pacific Northwest Canyoning ChickFest 2022

The Mountaineers will be hosting a group of women canyoners from out-of-state for a weekend of training in and descending our beautiful Pacific Northwest canyons. We believe there is power in women mentoring women, so only Canyon Leaders and Assistant Canyon Leaders who are women should sign up please.

Pacific Northwest ChickFest is for intermediate women canyoneers who want to experience the beautiful aquatic canyons of the PNW! The event is geared towards desert canyoneers who are newer to Class C. Participants must have descended at least 10 canyons and be comfortable swimming 50 feet in light current. No Class C canyoning experience is required.

We picked specific canyons to focus on Class C canyoning skills such as:

  • Rappelling in waterflow
  • Webbingless anchors (unlinked bolts)
  • Rigging and managing a releasable anchor
  • Retrievable traverse lines
  • Personal movement in water
  • Rope management in aquatic environments
  • Pack management in Class C canyons
  • Jumping, sliding and duck diving technique
  • Identifying hazards
  • Inversion self-rescue
  • Communication
  • As well as any other topics that might arise in-canyon

We plan to run canyons on Friday, Saturday and Sunday along the I-90 corridor east of Seattle. Potential canyons include Mineral Creek, South Fork Snoqualmie, Quicksilver, Incognito, Change Creek and Dingford. The final itinerary will be determined closer to the event when we have a more accurate weather forecast.

Participants must be proficient in how to rappel, including how to adjust friction and lock off, and in how to self-rescue. Participants must be prepared with the appropriate gear for cold, wet canyons including a thick wetsuit, sticky-soled boots, neoprene socks, pack with flotation and drainage, knife, whistle and extra warmth.
